Jessica Rabbit Process

Monday, April 21, 2008

For those interested, here is the first hour of work on Jessica condensed down to 10 minutes. It's a tad long to watch, but any faster and it was hard to see what's going on.

You'll notice one of my main reference images was an Angelina Jolie picture. I'm curious if that's why people think she looks like her or if she would have looked like her no matter who I used.

Definitely Angelina. But that is amazing work. Now if only we could harness your talents for Good.

Hey mate, you are really talented and patient person. It is incredible the amount of time it takes to do that, and just for fun. Keep the awesome work.

I think she looks like Traci Lords, myself, but then again, I always have.

You've got mad skilz, my friend, MAD! Keep it up!

Wow you made it look so easy.

Fantastic work. Long time photoshop user as well. It is always fascinating to know that no matter how far you get into photoshop, you never really can know it all. It's amazing to see what some people can do with it. Keep up the great works!

Very nice work!
Don`t need to say more

Anyone else think that 'Untooned' should be a recurring contest on Worth1000?

Pss.. do Samurai Jack

hybridjosto said...

I could watch a lot more of that! Awesome thanks for posting it.

Anonymous said...

Sweet work! I believe that many people think that she looks like Angelina because of her -gorgeous- lips. Maybe some Angelina remained in there (and I love how Jessica's lips came out).
Awesome video... will you post the rest?

Anonymous said...

I was surprised to see the use of Angelina Jolie as the raw material, since I thought the finished product very much resembled Christina Ricci (though not the original toon).

Anonymous said...

i could look at your stuff all day long

Jake said...

That was awesome. But something that I'm wondering is, what tool did you use to stretch the samples?

Anonymous said...

Now I know why she reminded me of Angelina (mainly because of the lips, I have to admit). Kate Walsh's hair is very fitting (I knew I had seen it somewhere!), it turned out great.

I can't wait to see Stewie, I bet it will be te creepiest by far!

Rob said...

love your work, and to see it in action was pretty awe-inspriring(even if it was in super fast motion). thanks

MW said...

So you know, the first day when you showed just the lips, I said: "Oh Boy, he's untooning Angelina Jolie" :) I knew they were her lips for some reason, but I didn't know you used her whole face!

This video was interesting to watch. I reckon it would take me 10 days and 20 migraines to accomplish that in Photoshop. You're a pro.

Anonymous said...

its the eye that makes it seem ananajolie

Anonymous said...

who you have used for the breast?? :p

Homage said...

I thought it looked like Angelina cause of the eyes mainly. I think she looks like Anjo partly cause she's an archetypally sultry-lookin' type but largely cause she's basically a bent-up version of an Anjo photo. Would be interesting to see what you could do with a Kathleen Turner photo - wasn't that who the original cartoon used as a visual reference?

Either way, like, wow.

Anonymous said...

Johnny Bravo would be SOOOO creepy.

Anonymous said...

That's one of the most amazing photoshop videos I've seen. I'm SO glad you actually retained that and shared it for us!

My untooned requests:

Penelope Pitstop! ;)

Popeye, Olive Oyl, Pappy, and sweet pea in a family portrait (heck, you could toss Alice the goon behind them, or the sea hag!)

The Power Puff girls

Fred Flintstone n Wilma

Fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing - out of interest, what tool/plug-in are you using in PS that's allowing you to reshape the layers so dynamically?

Anonymous said...

Deep thanks for the great work! We'd love to see how Betty Boop, Mr. Magoo and other retro characters become alive under your magic (digital) wand! (like you didn't have enough suggestions already!) Peace...

Anonymous said...

That is some amazing work. You've got amazing talent. Keep it up!

Anonymous said...

I suppose the best way to sate your curiosity is to do it again, but this time use Jessica Alba.

Not that that is in any way a trivial task, and I'm sure you would find it dull, having already made Mrs. Rabbit.

Anonymous said...

Please keep up these vids. The pics of homer and mario are very interesting but the real fascination comes from watching the process and the final result. I think the final pic is very good and Jessica works well in real life. Will eagerly await more.

I agree that Stewie or Betty Boo would be a great next project but if you want to challenge yourself maybe try Jessicas husband or another cartoon animal for a real tough time.

Peace!

Very cool to watch the video. I'm an amateur chopper so I learned a lot just watching the vid. Thank you so much for posting it online!

I'd concur with several of the untooning requests made already. Any of the Flintstones characters, Betty Boop (Christina Ricci would be a good source for her I think), Speed Racer (in honor of the lame-looking movie coming out soon), April O'Neal (from TMNT in case memories fade), Dexter from Dexter's Lab, Vicky the Babysitter from Fairly Oddparents, etc.

But for a CRAZY suggestion what about the Pink Panther? The amount of hair to deal with would be an adventure. ;)

J said...

awwwwwww, the video ended right when it was really getting interesting. Don't get me wrong, the whole video is great, but I was looking for the part where you'd create the ambience for the comp (the smoke, the dress, color matching, etc).

thanks, keep the good work!

Hey, could you post your reference pictures? I know you showed us the ones above the neck, but I'd like to see the whole bunch!

Anonymous said...

One reason people think of Angelina is because of her skin tone. You didn't change it to match Jessica's.

"I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way." -Jessica Rabbit

Anonymous said...

I've never seen anything like this before. It was amazing to watch!

Anonymous said...

Excellent work. I showed the photo to someone unfamiliar with Jessica Rabbit and who didn't see how the image was created and their first response was, "That looks like Angelina Jolie," so, yes, I think is a big part of why it came out so well.

You could also have used Tera Patrick as she looks very much like Jessica Rabbit, from the face to the mammaries.

Great work!

Its GREAT work!
I like the Homer one, but Jessica Rabbit is definitely the most awesome~

While watching the video I kinda LOL cos I work on PS just like u do, keep going back to some parts tat u r not satisfied with. Move on to the hair get back to the nose... work on the ears.... go back to the chin...
Back and forth all the time...

Angelina Jolie? Yeah, I can see it... I think it's mostly the lips though.

Anonymous said...

AMAZING!

Anonymous said...

It definitely has to do with using Jolie. She has a much darker, more olive complexion than the average white woman. Especially for a red-head. Most (natural) red-heads I know are pretty pale.

And the lips, too, of course

Anonymous said...

no way, I thought that top lip looked just like angelina's but thought I was being a little obsessed and it couldn;t have been. But Damn! Seeing that video of how you made it is unreal, anmazing skills you have... an absolute legend!

stunning.

I'm Really Impressed....Most incredible use of photoshop ive seen in a long time.
Best performance angelina Jolie has ever done.
I have ONE request...do have a LARGER copy of the video...Higher quality, so we can see the tools you used?
I can barley make it out.
By the time video's make you tube, they loook like crap.

Anonymous said...

Dude, you totally rock! Amazing work!

Whats that tool(effect) that deforms the picture like a mesh using a brush?

Thx

I have to say your work is amazingly inspiring. I was just thinking though, if you'd asked for texture suggestions (which you don't need to because your work is brilliant), I'd have said you'd have had an easier time with Jessica Rabbit's hair if you'd used Marcia Cross (Bree from Desperate Housewives) as a reference as her hair style and colour is so similar to Jessica Rabbit's, it probably wouldn't have needed quite so much need for distortion or editing.

Either way, like I say you don't need my suggestions, because the end result was amazing.

I totally want to try and copy you but I know I'd fail miserably XD.

I don't know whom I should applaud. The marvel of digital imagery or the marvel of your Photoshop skills and artistic chops. I think I'll applaud you both. Superb! Looking forward to more of your work!

Anonymous said...

I think she would've looked like Angelina anyway, though you did use Angie's picture to create a realistic Jessica Rabbit, you adjusted it to jessica's features

Anonymous said...

Watching this made me think of application of prosthetic makeup, with pieces of "real-woman face" being fitted and glued to the toon woman to make her able to pass for a human being: one can almost imagine a toon makeup artist working on Jessica. Of course, the re-shaping you had to do for each piece makes the process very different.

If I met a real woman who looked precisely like your final result, I'd feel an odd combination of extreme attraction and extreme repulsion. I can imagine a science-fiction story in which such radical changes can safely be made to human bodies, and some jaded, cynical woman (or perhaps man?) has decided to become a living Jessica just to see how people react. Anyway, a remarkable piece of work.

Anonymous said...

hey, where did you find those pictures of alyson hannigan? i need some red hair for a picture im doing, and those would be perfect
