Homer Simpson Untooned

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

As promised, if our beloved Simpson patriarch wasn't a toon.

This one was a bit more difficult in that i wanted the light to come in mainly from one side with a bit of back light. So all my reference had to be lit from one side. For textures i needed but didn't have this lighting situation, i had to darken or light a bit to give the same effect.

For clarification, these aren't studies of what Homer would look like if he was a real person, its just what a cartoon like Homer would look like if he kept his toon proportions but had realistic texturing and lighting. I find this slightly less disturbing than the Mario one. :) Some might feel he looks too old, keep in mind he was in his 30's 20 years ago when the show first started. ;)

I saved my texture reference photos this time and i'll post those up in the next couple days for those who are interested.

I think Homer has a beard.

Anonymous said...

I think you should do something for wrinkle around eyes: it looks older than the authentic one... Good work however!

That is some serious shit!

Well done with hangin on in there to get it finished. It looks fantastic! There is always going to be criticism about artists work as people see things that they believe would make it look better. And when those critics stop, then you have a master piece.

That's what I think.

Hey, your blog is in the Guide supplement of the Gaudrian magazine which is how I found this. This is really cool and I'm a bit of a photoshopper myself and thought this might be fun to have a go at. I've been working on one for the last few hours. Don't worry I'm only doing this for my own pleasure. I think I'll e-mail you the result fo my first go afterwards. I have to say it is a lot of fun to watch the picture formulate.

Anonymous said...

Great stuff! The Homer is my favorite. I'd love to see you try your hand at Leela from "Futurama." It would be a real challenge to make her cyclopean and still hot.

Anonymous said...

Man your drawing are just great, you should do tekken characters like that too.

this one is my favorite!

Wow! A lot of bloggers thought Mario looked like a pedophile. I think he's a bit scary but... Homer?! I can definitely see Homer standing outside of a playground, wearing a rain coat, handing out candy. Creepy!

Fantastic work! I wish I could see your step-by-step process (secret).

Works of this quality must be time consuming, yet extremely rewarding to someone who's as creative as you obviously are.

If I had your talent I believe I'd try an oldie, like Popeye or Olive Oyl.

Anonymous said...

wow! that is so weird! i love it!

Would you be able to do this with an entire frame from The Simpsons? Not like...one with all the characters...but a quick screen shot from an episode or something?

If you can...how long do you think it would take you to do it? And how much would you charge someone if they asked you to? :)
