Jessica Rabbit Untooned

Jessica Rabbit

So this ended up taking quite a bit longer than the last 2 even though I had expected a pretty easy time with it. I was able to complete the face relatively quickly but the real challenge was everything from her neck down. Trying to piece together parts of a body from multiple photos on top of a highly disproportionate body was pretty difficult. I considered only doing the face but I predicted pitchforks and torches if I chose that route. Creating the sequins took a bit of time too. I recently saw some camera effects in a music video I tried to duplicate too with the streaked brightness which I gave a shot here to add to the whole realism.

Anyway, I recorded the first hour of the creation of this one using Camtasia which includes all the face elements and the hair. It's not the complete process since this ended up taking a few hours longer than anticipated but I think it will help the curious get a general idea of how this was accomplished. It's sped up a bunch and so it only takes 10 minutes to view. I have to edit together some of the footage but once I get that done i'll post it here in a few days. (*UPDATE*: its posted here now)

Since Stewie Griffin was second in the poll, I'll work on him the next time I make an untoon.

*UPDATE*
Hey all, I just wanted to clarify a bit. Perhaps "untoon" is the wrong word for this but the exercise here was to take the exact cartoon proportions of Jessica and create her with realistic lighting and textures. As was done with Homer and Mario. I think because of her smooth skin the cartooniness definitely still comes through a lot more than Homer. Here is a side by side of the source image I started with.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback so far!

I'd like to see the photos you took elements from to make this. Like you posted after you finished Homer.

Great job.

First of all let me say that your work is fantastic.
If I can criticize a little, I think is a little below of Homer and Mario in terms of quality: the texture of the skin in the face is a little too uniform, an something wrong happened with her earring.
Nonetheless I think is an awesome work, keep it up!

Anonymous said...

Ok, after I sent my previous comment I wish I didn't.
I know how hard work must have been, and I know the skin of Jessica must be smoother than the skin of Mario or Homer, so please nevermind my criticism. Best regards, and keep up the good work!

Anonymous said...

Huh, that was surprisingly un-creepy.

Anonymous said...

Dude, you are my hero.
Can you post the reference image? As you did with Mario/Homer.

Wooooow... really, really nice!
I was thinking, maybe after Stewie, the next one could be Charlie Brown, from Peanuts? That'd be a pretty good challenge as well...
I can't wait until the video is out!
Thank you for Jessica! She is really awesome!

That is really really kinda disturbing/creepy.

Wow I love your work man! I can't lie and say that there's a bit of scariness in your work but the beauty outshines it. Please don't stop doing your art.

Still looks like a cartoon to me.

Wow that is amazing yet a bit creppy because I think her Eye is a bit too big. Kinda reminds me of Lela from Futurama like she would only have one eye. The Rest of her is Amazing the skin, lips,Dress & the smokey background. You Sir indeed have talent!!!

Anonymous said...

It's a good work, but I can't see the untooned work. She's like the cartoon but texturized. Sorry.

Anonymous said...

I just love this! I hope you don't mind if I steal your idea, sort of - I'm looking to "photo-rise" Renoir's "Luncheon of the boating party". I'll link back, of course!

Anonymous said...

Must say, allthough the work is impressive, she's still a litle to cartoonish. I'd hoped for a more untooned verison. But still, very nice picture.

Anonymous said...

Still looks like a cartoon, even the textures. At best it could pull off CG. Considering the amount of blog traffic, i'm glad i have ABP on jut to make sure I don't contribute any money to looking at something I couldn't just find on Google.

Find something else to occupy your time with.

Anonymous said...

Looks like Angelina Jolie doesn't it...sorta?

Anonymous said...

I thought the textures that came across were great, skin, lips, they all look very lifelike. The hair is amazing, can't wait to see your video for this. I'm not sure how it could be viewed as cartoonish still, since other than the odd proportions it looks pretty much like something you'd see in the pages of a magazine. Impressive.

Anonymous said...

Laura Prepon (formerly of That 70's Show) would probably make a good Jessica...

OH, and by the way - your work is incredible. Homer does kind of freak me out though... haha.

You do great work, and would love to see some of the old Cartoons come to life. Bugs and his gang, Or hell even Mickey would be cool to see come to life. Who ever you work for, there not paying you enough!. Keep it up.

Anonymous said...

Great job again...it's awesome!
I noticed that some people have not been surprised from the final result.
It's normal that the final impact is not the same as Homer and Mario...she is already a human, very close to real person..so there is not so much challange on this character. Everybody wanted so much to see her untooned cause she is really hot...but i imagined the result. Anyway, the work is great as always..and the final result is perfect. I'm curious to see Stewee...and popeye too...this two characters are very funny shape and surely would be really cool untooned! I think this is the real mission of Pixeloo...untooing those character that nobody would imagine untooned !!! I hope to see also a tutorial, or just some tips (in case you don't want to reveal your secrets). See you on the next work.

Don't listen to the few douchebags that leave negative comments, they're obviously just extremely jealous of your talent (I'm guessing they can't produce anything creative themselves, so they feel the need to anonymously bash others).

i'm still looking forward to popeye (or stewie), i think jessica rabbit is a little too "normal" to be untooned, i mean with homer and mario we got drawings with un-proportioned facial features, just look at homer's eyes or mario's nose, with jessica we only got what... big eyelids? a tiny nose?

don't get me wrong, i think what you did to jessica's drawing was great, its just that, as i said, untooned jessica doesn't have the same charm as homer and mario

Justin Ekins said...

You are amazing. Keep it up!

Hey, really creative stuff. Here's a suggestion. Some Mike Judge stuff. Not unnecessarily Beavis and Butthead, but moreso King of the Hill or some of the B and B supporting cast. it'd be interesting to see because Judge usually keeps them pretty proportionate so your version would probably be the most humanistic and realistic.

I have to say, I'm not impressed. I think you could have chosen a better source image, one where her bottom lip doesn't look like it was stung by a bee. Also if the only person you referenced was Angelina Jolie, then that was a mistake. She has pencil thin eyebrows similar to Pamela Anderson. The eyebrow you gave her looks pretty terrible. Maybe everyone says she still looks like a cartoon because overall her face is pretty flat. Try putting a little gloss on her lips to add the illusion of dimension. Use the burn tool to define her face around the cheek bones and chin. Also someone else had mentioned that the texture of the skin on her face was too uniform and I have to agree. I guess overall you did a good enough job to get tons of diggs, but from an artists perspective I'd say it's unfinished.

Outstanding work. Your lighting and smoke effects are brilliant.

Natural red hair does tend to be coarser even than American native hair, but whether by accident or by design, you managed to recapture realism in Jessica's finer hair texture with just a hint of brunette roots.

Like a few others here, I would be curious to see Jessica incarnated with slightly more realistic proportions (well, facial proportions, anyway).

I know a flaming redhead in real life who looks and dresses like Jessica Rabbit. Even with a real human face there is no mistaking her resemblance to the original toon. I would call her an "incarnation".

This also leads me to wonder what you could do with other femmes like Nikita, Lara Croft, Barbarella, Aeon Flux, Wonder Woman, Archie's Veronica, Betty Rubble... Olive Oyl ?!?

i don't like this one that much, it looks less "untooned" and more like an airbrush painting than a real person with skin. the mario and homer ones had a real look to them, but this one still looks like the cartoon more than a real person.

I don't know if you read all your comments or not, but I wanted to join the many others in saying these pictures are AWESOME. It's such a great concept/idea, and it shows a great mastery of photoshop.

But! You know this picture would be a HIT poster! You could make so much money selling the rights of it to a poster company. Especially if you made a realistic Stewie picture (and it not look too creepy) there is a HUGE business in novelty Family Guy items: posters, toys, etc.

Keep up the GREAT work.
